Day 2 · Faith

Faith

The ideaIn a 20-year study of almost 75,000 women, those who attended religious services more than once a week had a 33% lower risk of dying during the study than those who never attended (Li and colleagues, JAMA Internal Medicine, 2016). The pattern is regular practice, done with other people.

Do this today

1The practice from my own tradition I’ll keep this week:

2When I’ll do it:

Day
Time

3Who I’ll do it with:

This week

✓Tick each day you kept it up.

MON
TUE
WED

FRI
SAT
SUN

Reflect

?What did keeping this practice regularly give me this week?

The honest note: this was an observational study, so it shows a link, not proof. The women were mostly white Christian nurses. Keep the practice for its own sake, not as a health strategy.

Day 3 · Family

Family

The ideaCouples who stayed together had about five positive exchanges for every negative one, even during an argument. Couples near one to one were at much higher risk of divorce (Gottman and Levenson; The Gottman Institute).

Do this today

1Tonight’s count at home:

Positive moments
Negative moments

2Three small positives I’ll add on purpose (a thank you, a real question, a hand on a shoulder):

3One I’ll add for each of my kids:

✓Tick each day you kept it up.

Reflect

?What changed at home when I added the positives on purpose?

The honest note: the ratio was measured during conflict between couples. It isn’t a quota. If a relationship involves fear or harm, kindness is not the answer. Getting help is.

Day 4 · Friends

Friends

The ideaA review of 148 studies covering 308,849 people found that those with stronger social relationships had a 50% greater likelihood of survival over the study periods (Holt-Lunstad, Smith and Layton, PLoS Medicine, 2010).

Do this today

1Five people I’d call real friends, or would like to:

2The one I’ll contact today, and the plan (day, time, place):

This week

✓Tick each day you kept it up.

MON
TUE
WED
THU
FRI
SAT
SUN

Reflect

?How did it feel to make a specific plan instead of “we should catch up”?

The honest note: these studies show a link, not proof. Quality matters more than numbers. One or two close friends can matter more than a crowd.
