- Description: Many people plan their retirement money carefully and their retirement days not at all. The second plan matters just as much.

Retirement can be hard without purpose because work quietly provides many things beyond a paycheck: structure, people, challenge and a sense of being needed. When work ends, those can disappear too.

## What work quietly provides

- **A reason to get up** at a set time.
- **People** you see and talk to every day.
- **Challenges** that keep your mind engaged.
- **A role** where others count on you.
- **An identity**, the answer to "What do you do?"

People often don't notice how much they relied on these until they're gone.

## What the research suggests

Research on purpose and health, such as a 2019 study by Aliya Alimujiang and colleagues of nearly 7,000 adults over 50, has found that people with a weaker sense of purpose had a higher risk of dying during the study period. That doesn't prove retirement without purpose shortens life, but it's a reason to take the question seriously.

## What it doesn't mean

Retirement isn't bad, and rest is a gift. Many people find their most meaningful years after their careers end. The difference is usually that they planned what they would give themselves to.

## The habit: plan your days, not just your money

Before retirement, plan for:

- **Who you'll serve.** Grandchildren, your church, a ministry, a nonprofit, your neighborhood.
- **What you'll build or learn.** A skill, a business, a craft, a project.
- **Who you'll spend time with.** Friendships outside of work.
- **How you'll stay active.** Daily movement and regular routines.

## The rule that makes it stick: start before you stop

Begin these roles before your last day of work. Volunteer, build friendships outside work and start projects while you're still employed, so retirement is a shift, not a cliff.

## This week

If retirement is in your future, write down three things you'll give your time to when work ends. Start one of them now in a small way.

## The keep

Planning your retirement days costs some thought now. It makes those years full instead of empty.
