Friendship is easy to treat as optional, something you fit in after work, family and everything else. The research says it belongs much higher on the list. Strong relationships are linked to better health, better moods and longer lives.

## What the research says

In 2010, researchers led by Julianne Holt-Lunstad at Brigham Young University combined 148 studies covering more than 300,000 people. People with stronger social relationships had about a 50% greater likelihood of survival over the study periods than people with weaker ones.

The Harvard Study of Adult Development has followed the same group of men since 1938, and later their families. Its directors have said for years that the quality of people's relationships turned out to be one of the clearest signals of who stayed healthy and happy into old age.

## What the research can't say

These studies show strong links, not proof that friends cause long life. Healthier people may find it easier to keep friends. The researchers controlled for many factors, but not all of them.

The pattern is consistent enough, across enough studies, that it's worth acting on anyway.

## The habit: treat friendship like it matters

Most adults don't lose friends in a fight. They lose them to drift. Busy seasons stack up, plans get postponed, and years pass. Treating friendship as important means giving it the same planning you give work.

- Name the three to five people you most want in your life ten years from now.
- Notice when you last spent real time with each of them.
- Make the first move instead of waiting for theirs.

## The rule that makes it stick: put it on the calendar

Friendship that depends on spare time rarely happens, because spare time rarely shows up. A standing plan, such as breakfast every other Saturday or a weekly call on the drive home, keeps it going through busy seasons.

## This week

Pick one person from your list and set a time to see them. Put it on the calendar like any other appointment.

## The keep

Making time for friends costs a few hours a month. It returns people who'll still be there when life gets hard, and a life that's better for having them in it.
