- Description: A shared meal is one of the simplest ways to stay connected as a family. It doesn't need to be fancy, nightly or perfect to matter.

Family dinners matter because they're one of the few regular times a family sits together, talks and listens. The food matters less than the time and the conversation.

## What the research can and can't say

Many studies have found that children and teens who eat regularly with their families tend to do better on measures such as mood and behavior. But researchers have also pointed out that families who eat together may differ in other ways, such as having more time, stability or resources, so it's hard to say how much the meals themselves cause the benefits. The likely ingredient is connection, and dinner is simply a reliable time to build it.

## What makes a family meal work

- **Regular, not perfect.** A few times a week beats a rare, elaborate meal.
- **Phones away.** For everyone, including parents.
- **Conversation, not lectures.** Ask open questions: What was the best part of your day? What was hard?
- **Everyone helps.** Cooking, setting the table and cleaning up together.
- **Any meal counts.** If dinner doesn't work, breakfast or a weekend lunch can serve the same purpose.

## What it doesn't mean

Busy families, shift workers and single parents can't always eat together every night. That's fine. The aim is a regular rhythm that fits your life.

## The habit: protect a few meals a week

Pick the nights that work and treat them as fixed: no practices, meetings or screens during that time when you can help it.

## The rule that makes it stick: plan meals ahead

Family dinners often fall apart because nobody planned the food. Plan the week's meals on the weekend and shop once.

## This week

Choose three meals this week to eat together, phones away, and ask one good question at each.

## The keep

Regular family meals cost some planning and some rearranged schedules. They give your family a place to talk that busy days rarely provide.
