Open your calendar. Look at the next seven days. Who put those things there?
Some of it was you. Most of it was not. The recurring meeting nobody questioned. The notification you respond to because somebody else made the rule. The Sunday claimed by an obligation you took on three years ago and never reviewed. The morning routine that is actually a sequence of reactions to whatever happens to be on your phone first.
Your week is a building. Most men did not draw the blueprints. They walked into a building somebody else built and tried to live in it.
The architecture decides what is easy. If the building was designed by your boss, your in-laws, your phone, and the assumptions of the men in the next office, the easy moves will be the ones that make their lives work. Not yours.
WEALTH
The architecture of your money is the same problem as the architecture of your week. Most men do not have a wealth strategy. They have a sequence of reactions to bills that arrived.
The default building is this. Income hits the account. Bills draw from the account in the order they show up. Whatever is left funds whatever you happen to want that month. Savings, if there are any, are the residue.
This weekend, redesign the foundation. Not the whole house. The foundation. Set up one automatic transfer that moves a fixed amount, on the day after payday, into an account you do not check. The amount can be twenty dollars. The amount is not the point. The order is the point. Pay the future first. Pay the building second. Spend what is left.
Most men try to fix wealth at the end of the month. The architecture decides at the beginning.
POWER
The default architecture of your power is that other people get the first cut of your time. Email opens before you do. Slack pings before breakfast. Your boss's priority arrives before yours. By the time you sit down to do work that compounds, you have given the best three hours of your day to other people's questions.
Power is what you have left after everyone else has taken what they wanted. If the architecture lets them take it first, you will never have any.
This week, build one wall. Pick the ninety minutes that should be yours. Probably first thing, before the building wakes up. Phone in another room. Email closed. Door shut. One ninety-minute block, on Tuesday, for the one piece of work that is yours.
The wall does not have to be permanent yet. It has to exist once.
SUCCESS
The reason most plans fail is not that the plan was wrong. The plan was right. The architecture around it was wrong. You committed to write at 6am, in a building where your phone is on the nightstand and your email opens automatically and the kids' alarm goes off at 5:55. The plan was set up to lose.
The work this week is not more willpower. It is one piece of architecture that makes the right move the easy one.
Pick one habit you keep failing at. Look at the building around it. Find the one piece of the building that is making it hard. The phone next to the bed. The treadmill that is also a coat rack. The desk that is also where the kids do homework. Move that one piece. Tonight. Not all of them. One.
You will notice the habit gets easier. Not because you got more disciplined. Because the building stopped fighting you.
