When you don't have much time, volunteer in small, regular ways that fit your life: a monthly shift, a skill you already have, or service you can do with your family.

## Why small service counts

Many people never volunteer because they picture a big commitment. But a small, steady contribution, done for years, often does more good than a burst of effort that burns out. Organizations depend on people who show up reliably.

## Ideas that fit busy lives

- **A monthly shift** at a food bank, shelter or church ministry.
- **Use a skill you already have:** bookkeeping, repairs, teaching, design, cooking.
- **Serve as a family:** packing meals, visiting a nursing home, cleaning up a park.
- **Help one person regularly:** mow an elderly neighbor's lawn, drive someone to appointments.
- **Serve where you already are:** your church, your kids' school, your workplace.

## What it doesn't mean

Volunteering isn't meant to add guilt to an already full life. In some seasons, caring for your own family is your main service, and that's enough.

## The habit: choose one place and stay

Jumping between causes rarely builds much. Choosing one place and staying lets you build relationships, learn the work and see the results over time.

## The rule that makes it stick: put it on the calendar for the year

Choose a regular date, such as the second Saturday of each month, and put it on your calendar for the whole year. Tell the organization so they're counting on you.

## This week

Pick one organization or person, and commit to one small, regular way to serve.

## The keep

Regular service costs a few hours a month. It builds purpose, friendships and a community that's better for your being in it.
