You leave a lasting legacy mainly through people: the values you live, the habits you pass on, the stories you tell and the people you help shape. Money can be part of a legacy, but it's rarely the most important part.

## What lasts

Think about the people who shaped you most. You probably remember:

- **How they lived,** more than what they owned.
- **What they taught you** by example.
- **Their faith, their work ethic, their kindness.**
- **Time they spent with you.**
- **The stories they told.**

These are the things that pass from one generation to the next.

## Why money alone isn't enough

Money left without values often doesn't last. Money left without the habits that built it can be spent quickly. A legacy of character tends to outlast a legacy of cash.

## The habit: live the legacy now

- **Model the habits you want to pass on.** Children copy what you do more than what you say.
- **Tell your story.** Write down how you grew up, what you learned and what you believe.
- **Spend time, not just money,** on the people who'll carry your legacy.
- **Teach skills:** how to work, save, cook, fix things, pray and treat people.
- **Mentor someone outside your family.**

## What it doesn't mean

A legacy isn't about being remembered by many people. It's about shaping a few people well.

## The rule that makes it stick: write it down

Write a short letter to the people you love about what you believe and what you hope for them. Update it every few years. It turns good intentions into something lasting.

## This week

Write down three values you want to pass on. Choose one way to teach or show one of them this week.

## The keep

Building a legacy of character costs time and example. It's the inheritance that can't be spent.
