The best way to keep friendships alive in busy seasons is to make them regular and small. A short, predictable rhythm of contact beats waiting for the perfect free weekend that never comes.

## Why friendships fade

Few friendships end in a fight. Most fade through drift. A new job, a move, a baby or a demanding season fills every evening, and the "we should get together" messages never turn into plans. Years later, you realize you haven't really talked in a long time.

Research on adult friendship, including Jeffrey Hall's 2018 work on how many hours friendships take, points to the same thing: relationships are kept up by time together. When the time stops, closeness slowly does too.

## What actually helps

- **Standing plans.** A monthly breakfast, a weekly call, a yearly trip. A fixed rhythm survives busy seasons better than open-ended intentions.
- **Small touches.** A text when something reminds you of them. A voice message on the drive home. Small contact keeps the thread from breaking.
- **Combine life with friendship.** Invite a friend to your kid's game, to run errands, to work out. Not every visit needs to be an event.
- **Show up for the big moments.** Weddings, funerals, hospital stays and moves are when friendships are made or lost.

## What it doesn't mean

You won't keep every friendship at the same closeness forever, and that's fine. Some friendships are for a season. The goal is to stop losing the ones you want to keep because of drift.

## The rule that makes it stick: automate the reminder

Put a recurring reminder on your phone to contact each of your closest friends at a set rhythm, such as every two weeks. It sounds mechanical, but it turns good intentions into actual calls.

## This week

Pick one friend you've been meaning to call. Call them, and before you hang up, set a date for the next time.

## The keep

Keeping friendships alive costs a little planning and a few minutes a week. It means you still have the people who matter when the busy season ends.
