- Description: Most good mentors aren't found by asking a stranger to be your mentor. They grow out of small, specific questions and showing you follow through.

The best way to find a mentor is usually not to ask someone to be your mentor. Instead, ask specific questions of people a few steps ahead of you, act on their advice, and tell them what happened. Over time, some of those conversations turn into a mentoring relationship.

## Why the big ask fails

"Will you be my mentor?" sounds simple, but it asks a busy person for an open-ended commitment to someone they don't know. Many say no, or say yes and nothing happens.

A specific question is easy to answer: "How did you get your first client?" or "What would you read if you were starting in this field?" It respects their time and shows you're serious.

## What to look for

- **A few steps ahead, not miles.** Someone who recently did what you're trying to do often gives the most useful advice.
- **Character, not just success.** You'll absorb their habits along with their advice.
- **Honesty.** A mentor who only praises you isn't helping.

You can also have several mentors for different parts of life: work, money, faith, marriage, health.

## How to build the relationship

1. **Ask one specific question.** Keep it short and easy to answer.
2. **Act on the answer.** This is where most people stop.
3. **Report back.** "I tried what you suggested, and here's what happened." People invest in those who follow through.
4. **Offer something back.** Help with a project, share something useful, make an introduction.
5. **Repeat.** A relationship grows from many small exchanges.

## What it doesn't mean

A mentor won't hand you a career or a life. They can save you time and mistakes, but the work is still yours.

## The rule that makes it stick: always close the loop

Make it a rule to report back after every piece of advice you act on. It's the single habit that turns one conversation into an ongoing relationship.

## This week

Write down one person a few steps ahead of you. Send them one specific question.

## The keep

Finding a mentor costs some courage and a lot of follow-through. It can save you years of learning things the hard way.
