To change careers without starting over, identify the skills that transfer, build the missing ones while you're still employed, and use your network to make the move one step at a time.

## What transfers

Most careers build skills that apply elsewhere: managing people, solving problems, selling, writing, organizing, serving customers, handling money. Your industry knowledge may also be valuable in a new role that serves that same industry.

## A step-by-step approach

1. **Get specific.** "I want something different" isn't a plan. Name the role you want.
2. **Talk to people in it.** Ask what the work is really like and what skills matter.
3. **Find the gap.** List the skills or credentials you're missing.
4. **Build them while employed.** Courses, side projects, volunteer work or a certification.
5. **Bridge roles.** Look for a job that combines your current experience with the new field.
6. **Build a cushion.** Save several months of expenses before making the jump.

## What it can't promise

Some changes do require a step back in pay or title for a while. A career change is a bet on future growth, and it's wise to count the cost before you start.

## The habit: build the new skill before you need it

Most successful career changes happen gradually: learning in the evenings, taking on a project at work, volunteering, then making the move once the new skills are real.

## The rule that makes it stick: decide the steps before you quit

Write down the full plan, including the skills, the savings and the timeline, before you resign. A plan keeps a hard week at your current job from pushing you into a rushed move.

## This week

Name the role you want. Find one person doing it and ask for 20 minutes to learn about their work.

## The keep

A careful career change costs time, study and patience. It lets you build something new without throwing away what you've already built.
