- Description: Most exercise plans fail in the second month, not the first. A few simple design choices make it far more likely you'll still be going a year from now.

To build an exercise habit that lasts, make it small enough to do on your worst day, put it at a fixed time, and plan for missed days before they happen.

## Why most plans fail

Exercise plans usually start big. Six days a week, an hour each, a strict diet on top. Motivation carries the first few weeks. Then a busy week, an illness or a trip breaks the streak, and the whole plan collapses.

The problem is the design, not the person.

## What actually helps

- **Start smaller than feels useful.** Ten minutes you'll do beats an hour you'll skip.
- **Fix the time.** The same time every day, such as before work or after dinner.
- **Prepare the night before.** Lay out clothes and shoes.
- **Choose something you don't hate.** The best exercise is the one you'll keep doing.
- **Exercise with someone.** A partner who expects you makes skipping harder.

## What it doesn't mean

Starting small doesn't mean staying small. Once the habit is steady, add time or intensity a little at a time. The U.S. guidelines aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week plus two days of strength work, and you can build toward that.

## The rule that makes it stick: never let one missed day become two

Life will interrupt you. Decide ahead of time that a missed day is just a missed day. You restart at the next scheduled time without making up for it or starting over.

## This week

Choose one activity, one time and a starting length so small it feels almost too easy. Do it every scheduled day this week.

## The keep

A small, steady habit costs patience at the start. Over years, it adds up to far more than a big plan you quit in March.
