- Description: A good reputation at work isn't built in a big moment. It's built in hundreds of small ones, mostly by doing what you said you'd do.

You build a good reputation at work by being reliable, doing excellent work, being honest and treating people well, consistently, over a long time. Reputation is the sum of many small moments.

## What a reputation is built on

- **Reliability.** Doing what you said, when you said you'd do it.
- **Quality.** Work people don't have to check or redo.
- **Honesty.** Owning mistakes and telling the truth when it's uncomfortable.
- **Attitude.** Being someone people want to work with.
- **Helpfulness.** Sharing credit and helping others succeed.

## Why it matters

A good reputation brings opportunities you don't apply for: promotions, recommendations, new roles, clients and trust. It often follows you from job to job, because people talk and industries are smaller than they look.

## What it doesn't mean

Building a reputation isn't about self-promotion or being liked by everyone. It's about being trustworthy. People who chase image over substance tend to be found out.

## The habit: under-promise and over-deliver

- Give realistic deadlines.
- Meet them every time.
- When you can't, say so early.
- Do slightly more than asked when you can.

## The rule that makes it stick: decide your standards in advance

Write down a few standards you'll keep at work, such as "I meet every deadline I set" and "I admit mistakes the same day." When pressure hits, you'll already know how you'll act.

## This week

Pick one commitment at work you've been slow on. Finish it early, or give an honest update.

## The keep

A good reputation costs consistency every day. It opens doors for the rest of your career.
