- Description: Being home isn't the same as being present. A few protected times each day, with the phone put away, make a bigger difference than long hours in the same house.

Being present with your family means giving them your full attention at regular, protected times, not just being in the same house. In busy seasons, a few focused moments each day matter more than long hours half-distracted.

## Why presence slips

Phones, work messages and a constant stream of tasks follow us home. It's possible to spend a whole evening with your family and give them almost none of your attention. Kids and spouses notice the difference.

## What helps

- **Protect a few daily moments:** breakfast, the drive to school, dinner, bedtime.
- **Put the phone away** during those moments, out of sight, not face down on the table.
- **Make eye contact and listen.** Ask about their day and wait for the real answer.
- **Do ordinary things together:** cooking, chores, errands, walks.
- **Have one-on-one time** with each child and with your spouse, even briefly.

## What it doesn't mean

Being present doesn't mean entertaining your family every minute or never working. It means that when you're with them, you're really with them.

## The habit: transition home

Many people carry work into the house. Create a small transition: a short walk, a few minutes in the car, a prayer before you walk in. Leave work at the door.

## The rule that makes it stick: keep the phone out of reach

Choose a spot by the door or in another room where your phone lives during family times. Distance does what willpower can't.

## This week

Choose one daily family moment, such as dinner or bedtime, and make it phone-free every day this week.

## The keep

Being present costs some messages answered later. It gives your family the part of you they want most.
