To avoid burnout, protect regular rest, set limits on your work, keep some control over how you work, and watch for early warning signs before they turn into exhaustion.

## What burnout is

The World Health Organization added burnout to its International Classification of Diseases in 2019, describing it as an occupational phenomenon that results from chronic workplace stress that hasn't been successfully managed. It's marked by exhaustion, growing distance or cynicism toward your job, and feeling less effective at work.

## Early warning signs

- Dreading work most days.
- Feeling tired even after rest.
- Becoming cynical or short with people.
- Losing interest in things you used to enjoy.
- Getting sick more often.

## What helps

- **Rest regularly.** Sleep, a weekly day off and real vacations.
- **Set limits.** A time when work stops each day, when possible.
- **Talk to your manager** about workload before it becomes unmanageable.
- **Keep life outside work:** friends, family, faith, exercise and hobbies.
- **Focus on what you can control,** and let go of what you can't.

## What it can't fix

Some burnout comes from jobs that are simply unsustainable. If the problem is the job itself, the real fix may be a change. If you feel hopeless or depressed, talk to a doctor or counselor.

## The rule that makes it stick: build recovery before you need it

Don't wait to rest until you're burned out. Put rest on the calendar the same way you put meetings there: a daily stopping time, a weekly day off and planned time away.

## This week

Choose a time to stop working each day this week, and keep it.

## The keep

Protecting rest costs some hours you could have worked. It keeps you able to do good work for decades instead of months.
